| unidentified Cyanobacteria; the arrowheads point to some breakpoints where so-called hormogonia have separated from the main trichomes. Hormogonia are small to multicellular pieces of trichomes that hatch out of the sheath and move longitudinally or additionally by rotation around the longitudinal axis by sliding creeping movements on a moist substrate. They can grow into immobile trichomes, forming a new sheath. (An exception to this is the sheath-less Oscillatoria in which the trichome, which originates from hormogonies, retains its own motion (the mechanism of which is still largely unexplained). Oscillatoria trichomes can therefore be considered as "permanent hormogonia").
